Visual track inspection systems generate significantly more data than other inspection approaches. Depending on the frequency of sampling and imaging resolution, terabytes of data can be captured for a relatively small part of rail network. The management of this data is requires specialised tools for both processing and viewing the analysis.

Information management (IM) is required at different levels including:

Data capture
IM tools are responsible for efficient data capture at high speeds, and storing the information on-board the vehicle in dedicated storage. It data transfer is required, IM tools provide appropriate hardware and software modules to facilitate this process.

Image and laser data processing and understanding
On-board data processing is often restricted in its capability given limited on-board processing resources. Therefore, we provide both on-board data processing tools as well as offline data processing tools that work in an office environment. Critical defects such as information on broken rails are recognised near real-time on-board and an alarm is generated for the vehicle operator. Collected data is thereafter transferred by the operator to an office environment where Rail Vision provides data storage and processing infrastructure for recognition of other defects. Rail Vision supplies a range of IM tools for data archiving, distributed data processing, database management, and review of results.

Analysis review and reporting
It is impossible to review the image and laser analysis results with corresponding visual data without efficient software tools given the enormous size of raw data. We provide Enhanced Visual Inspection software suite for the review of such analysis with tools for importing information from other track testing modalities such as ultrasonics, geometry and profiling, plotting defect locations on route maps, and generating a broad range of customised reports for listing defects and detecting changes in track condition by comparing multiple runs.
